Unpopular opinion regarding Struck By Lightning.

What’s interesting about the film to me is, while Carson says, ” I know what it’s like to be an outed, outsider.” That’s about as far as the film goes regarding his sexuality. It’s not about his struggle to come to terms with his sexuality and his sexuality has nothing to do with the reason why he struggles in school. It’s about a teenager who has problems like any other teenager so, the fact that his sexuality is never an issue is really something I’ve never seen before. It’s kind of unheard of.

Everyone is taking this comment about his sexuality, including the person discussing it above.

Here’s the thing: from the second I read this quote, I NEVER thought “outed” was in terms of being outed sexually. I took it in terms of being shunned or boosted out or not wanted.

Because isn’t Carson shown as an outsider who has basically been outed to social pariah zone from his entire school?

And it bothers me a little, that everyone is so obsessed with Carson’s sexuality and whether he’s gay or straight and did Chris mention it at all and let’s take every line and give it this subtext.

It doesn’t matter to the plot; why does it matter to everyone else?

I understand for fics and whatnots, but in that case, Carson’s sexuality is entirely up to the author.
